Carterton Church Fair

A visit to a local church fair in Carterton. I stumbled across a remarkable preserve stall run by Don & Hilary Baskerville, who run The Baskervilles B&B. Alongside the mountain of preserves, they were selling some of their Organic produce, including some early seed Maori Potatoes (Urenika?) which are said to have been originally brought from South America by the Maori. That’s quite a paddle!

The beautiful Bella, and her Haystack stall. Including a chance to win a prize for locating the hidden needle.

A delightful lady selling ‘Mystery Bottles’ with an exquisite hand-drawn sign which would do El Lizzitsky proud.

  1. Yes, Don & Hilary are renowned for this, but do be aware, like us, they live in Carterton New Zealand, not Oxfordshire! There is now a Saturday morning market at Solway on the way to Masterton too which has a lot of good produce I trust it will grow to the size of some of the UK Farmer’s markets one day. As for us, we do preserves because there is so much good produce here, old English pork pies and sausages because they are hard to find quality versions of. Oh, and there’s a Welshman just up the road brewing beer, so Carterton is quite the place for Brits!
